The 14th Annual Zanzibar International Film Festival, 18-26th June 2011Welcome to the 14th annual Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF). With just 10 weeks to go until Tamasha, it is time to get excited. Celebrating cinema from all over Africa and beyond, ZIFF 2011 will welcome friends old and new to our beautiful island. “A Season of Visions” is the inspiring theme of the 2011 festival, which runs from 18th-26th June. At present over 60 films from the Dhow countries, and internationally, are being selected – for competitive and non-competitive categories. Workshops & Industry EventsA dynamic program of Film Workshops has been developed to cater for the interests of everyone – from local children to industry professionals. The focus will be on Documentary Film Making, with award winning British Documentary Maker Nick Broomfield lending his expert knowledge to a Master class. Broomfield is ranked as one of the best documentary film-makers in the world and we are delighted that he will be taking part in ZIFF 2011. Other star guests are British film journalist and producer Donald Ranvaud and independent film makerDanny Schecher.
As always ZIFF aims to support and promote the local film industry. During the festival the Soko Filam event will encourage the promotion and distribution of regional films, presenting to the regional and international entertainment industry the opportunities, financial benefits and technical expertise available not only in East Africa, but in Africa as a whole. A special Location Africa Project aims to bring the spotlight on Zanzibar as a tourist attraction and more importantly Tanzania as a film location. Major film producers from all over the world will be invited to this expo.
Another exciting event for film industry attendees will be The Pitch Tree - our production and financing market session. Filmmakers from East Africa will be invited to submit their projects to be included in our online video catalogue. The sessions will be open to all East African ZIFF on TV, Mambo Club, Australian Aboriginal Cinema, Community and ChildrenIn 2011 the ZIFF platform will be extended to the Television airwaves of East Africa! Ten films from ten African countries will be shown nightly on TV for the ten-day. Voting will be done by text message. This is an exciting opportunity for everyone to play a part in the Zanzibar International Film Festival and be a judge of 10 African films, voting for Best Film, Best Actor and Best Actress for the ZIFF Awards ceremony on June 26th. This fun and interactive part of the festival will give a chance to those who can’t come to Zanzibar to still enjoy quality cinema and voice their opinions.
An exciting strand of music and performing arts is also in store, with big plans for a jubilant carnival of music, song and dance, day and night at the Mambo Club in the Old Fort.
The program is packed with great films and events to suit everyone. As well as celebrating films of the Dhow countries there will also be some very interesting international contributions, including a strand of Australian Aboriginal cinema.
Community programs will include people from villages all over Zanzibar and the islands of Pemba and Unguja - with a focus on Women's and Children's issues and education.
The Children Film Panorama will again show a selection of 12 films from around the world to school children brought to the festival for this film awareness and education program. This year there will also be a song writing workshop with the celebrated Eric Wainaina of the Tinga Tinga Series fame and a writing workshop by Claudia Llyod of Tiger Aspects, UK (Producer Mr Bean, Tinga Tinga etc).
